Shady first entered Arkansas Foster Care at the age of 10, and has been in and out of the system for several years. Eventually he was able to find a permanent placement with a family that has helped him in many ways and whom he now considers to be his "forever" family. Shady has even taken their last name.
Shady has been involved in many leadership roles, including Friends of Rachel, an organization dedicated to the memory of Rachel Scott, who was a victim in the Columbine tragedy. He is also currently the president of his High School DECA program, an association of marketing students. Through his role in DECA he has helped to raise money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
Shady is also very involved with his local foster youth board. Shady has been a part of the Youth Advisroy Board since February 2009, and has been very involved in changing the foster care system at a local level. He is going to Washington DC for the National Foster Care Coalition in May to represent the state of Arkansas. He has also been helping with the Independence Program through WAEDA work force program.
A nature explorer and avid puzzle solver, Shady also loves to spend time with his friends and family. He even has talent in the decorating department, as can be seen here. He has a great outlook on life, and plans to spread this attitude to other youth in foster care. “I believe there is a positive in every negative and my passion is for all kids to understand this.”
